Our winter concert evokes a series of musical reflections as seen through the composer’s eye. Smetana’s “Moldau” from “Má vlast” takes us on the journey of two springs coming together high in the Bohemian forest, flowing through the Czech countryside, and becoming a mighty river arriving in the city of Prague. The orchestral suite from the opera- ballet “Mlada” is Rimsky-Korsakov’s mythical yarn woven together by folk tunes of many ethnicities and styles. In his “Roumanian Rhapsody” Enescu connects the folk tunes of his childhood with the flair of a gypsy orchestra in an unapologetic display of his love of country and of music.

With “Appalachian Spring” Aaron Copland creates an atmosphere of truly American music that follows a young farming couple, a preacher, and a pioneer woman over the course of a 19th century day in rural Pennsylvania. The well-known Shaker tune “Tis a gift to be simple” occurs toward the finale as the day ends with the same serene melody with which it began. We hope you will join us for these captivating reflections of each composer’s homeland.
