Spring Concert Announcement

Dayton, OH, March 31, 2008:  The Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra will present its final pair of concerts of the 2007-08 season on Saturday evening, April 12, and Sunday afternoon, April 13, 2008.

· The Saturday April 12 concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6450 Far Hills Avenue in Centerville.

· The Sunday April 13 concert will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Church in Harrison Township, on North Main Street at Philadelphia Drive.

 

Dr. Jiang Liu appears a guest conductor

The program will be conducted by Dr. Jiang Liu, the Music Director and Conductor of the University Orchestra and Coordinator of String Studies at the University of Dayton. Dr. Liu is also the Principal Guest Music Director and Conductor of Chengdu Symphony Orchestra and the Special Guest Conductor of the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra in China. A protégé of Maestro David Zinman, he graduated from the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. Dr. Liu has conducted numerous orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, including the orchestras of the University of Cincinnati, University of Illinois, University of Nebraska, Miami University, China National Youth Symphony, Central Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Chengdu Symphony Orchestra, and the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra. He has also released two highly reviewed CD’s with the Chengdu Philharmonic and the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra.

 

For this concert, Dr. Liu has selected Tchaikovsky’s final, and most emotional work, the Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique).

 

The second work, A Poem of Kangba, was written by the famous Chinese composer, Chang-qun Ao. Chang-Qun Ao (b.1950) is a distinguished international composer. He is the Professor of Composition, at Sichuan Conservatory of Music, and the President of the Sichuan State Musicians Association in China.  Mr. Ao graduated from Sichuan Conservatory of Music in 1982 major in composition.  His compositions include opera, orchestral works, chamber music, arts songs, film music and ballet music, many of which have won the top prizes from both Chinese National and Sichuan State Music Competitions and have been performed by many different orchestras from China, Europe and Asia. His composition, A Poem of Kangba describes the huge Tibetan region in Sichuan Province, Southwest of China. The tone poem displays the different features of Tibetan life and the spirit of their people. The work is receiving its U.S. premier at these concerts.

February Concert Announcement

Dayton, OH, February 11, 2008:  The Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra will present its second pair of subscription concerts of the 2007-08 season on Saturday evening, February 23, and Sunday afternoon, February 24, 2007.

· The Saturday February 23 concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6450 Far Hills Avenue in Centerville.

· The Sunday February 24 concert will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Church in Harrison Township, on North Main Street at Philadelphia Drive.

James Johnston Returns to Guest Conduct the MVSO

James johnston returns to the MVSO podium having conducted earlier concerts in February and April of 2005. Mr. Johnston has served on the music faculty of Antioch University since 1998. In recent years he has held conducting or assistant conducting posts with the Indianapolis Symphony, Earlham College, and the Southern Indiana Youth Symphony, where he was Founding Director. While a doctoral student at Indiana University, he conducted the String Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Opera and the New Music Ensemble. Mr. Johnston has also guest conducted with the Muncie Symphony, Indian Hill Symphony and Indian Hill Community Orchestra and the Seven Hills Sinfonietta. In addition to conducting, Mr. Johnston is an accomplished violinist and violist, having performed with numerous orchestras, period orchestras, and festival ensembles. Mr. Johnstons’ performances can be heard on CD on the Sony Classics, Titanic, Dorian, and North Star Labels.

 

For this concert, Mr. Johnston has chosen three works. The first it Hector Berlioz’ Rákóczi March, the unofficial state anthem of Hungary. The second is a major symphonic work by Félicien-César David, entitled Le desert. This work was inspired by David’s trip to the Middle East, and features a narrator, tenor soloist, and men’s chorus. The final work on the program is the Symphony in D minor, by César Franck. This work, last performed by the MVSO in October, 1998, is the only symphony written by Franck. It was completed on August 22, 1888 and premiered at the Paris Conservatory on February 17, 1889.

Autumn Concert Announcement

Dayton, OH, OCTOBER 10, 2007:  The Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra will present its inaugural pair of concerts of the 2007-08 season on Saturday evening, November 3, and Sunday afternoon, November 4, 2007.

· The Saturday November 3 concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6450 Far Hills Avenue in Centerville.

· The Sunday November 4 concert will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Church in Harrison Township, on North Main Street at Philadelphia Drive.

Guest Conductor Ken Kohlenberg

Dr. Kenneth Kohlenberg, Professor of Music at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio, will be the guest conductor for these concerts. Dr. Kohlenberg received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas, his Master of Music degree FROM Michigan State University, and both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan. Dr. Kohlenberg conducts the Community Concert Band, the Community Wind Symphony and the Youth Wind Ensemble at Sinclair Community College in Dayton.

For this concert, Dr. Kohlenberg has selected the Dvorak Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Opus 88, last performed by the MVSO in 1993. In addition, Dr. Kohlenberg has chosen the Overture to Rosamunde by Franz Schubert, the whimsical Under the Rug, by John Mackey, and the Piccolo Concerto in C, by Antonio Vivaldi, with concerto competition winner Katherine Bristol.
