A Very Special 20th Anniversary Concert

What could be better than hearing the works of two local composers at a concert with free admission in a beautiful, historic building?

The Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra (MVSO) celebrated its 20th Anniversary in grand style on May 16th with a very special concert at the beautiful Dayton Masonic Center.  The concert was dedicated to the memory of Charles Wendelken-Wilson, who served as the Music Director of the orchestra from 1990-1999.

Songs of the Valley, a symphonic poem by local composer John Parcell, was commissioned for this concert.  Dr. Parcell, a professor at Sinclair Community College, is a gifted and award-winning teacher, musician and composer.  The MVSO was privileged to present the world premiere of this exciting and beautiful composition.

The MVSO was also pleased to perform a beautiful work by local composer Steven Winteregg, Prelude for Charles, written in memory of Charles Wendelken-Wilson.  This work was premiered by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in 2009.  Dr. Winteregg, a professor at Cedarville College, has received dozens of awards for musical composition.

A highlight of the concert was the performance by Ashley Hall and her husband, Nathan Tighel, of Vivaldi’s rousing Concerto in C Major for Two Trumpets and Orchestra.   Ashley Hall, a graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, has performed across the United States, Mexico, and Europe.  She is a member of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Tighe received his Bachelor's Degree in trumpet performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and his Master's Degree from Boston University.  The duo received a standing ovation for their spectacular performance.

Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, the finale to Dvořák’s New World Symphony, the finale to Franck’s “Symphony in D Minor,” and Delius’ “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring” (a Charles Wendelken-Wilson favorite) rounded out the concert’s program.

The Masonic Scottish Rite auditorium was the perfect venue for this outstanding musical program.  It is located in the Dayton Masonic Center, which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Miami Valley area.  The building’s elegant charm and Victorian styling are reminiscent of the great mansions of an older, more refined era.  Tours of this magnificent building were available both before and after the concert.  The Dayton Masonic Learning Center was included in the tour.  Refreshments were served, with all donations for refreshments given to the Learning Center.

The Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra is an all-volunteer orchestra.  A number of the musicians have been members of the orchestra for the full twenty years of its existence.  These musicians were recognized at the concert, along with other long-term members of the orchestra.  The MVSO’s musicians range in age from twenty to eighty.  Some have careers in music, but many are employed in non-musical fields.  However, all are serious in their pursuit of making beautiful music together.

The MVSO is very grateful to the people and organizations that made the 20th Anniversary concert possible.  The Dayton Masonic Center generously donated the use of the auditorium.   The MVSO received a Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District Special Projects Grant for this event. The Kettering Health Network (KHN) also gave the MVSO a generous grant to provide for free admission.  The KHN especially promoted this event to its staff at Grandview Hospital.  The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra also very graciously promoted the MVSO concert at its “Symphony Sundae Concerts.”   The Ohio Arts Council helped fund the MVSO with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

The MVSO is looking forward to an exciting 21st season.
